History
A lot has changed over the years, however our approach to taking care of the insurance needs of our policyholders has remained the same. At BCM Insurance, we have been keeping promises since 1880. The feeling is mutual.
1880
Founded in 1880, the Bertie & Willoughby Farmers Mutual Insurance Company began its operations in Fenwick, Ontario. With a commitment to community support, the company issued its first fire insurance policy among 104 initial subscribers.
1898
In 1898, another local insurer emerged—the Township of Clinton Mutual Fire Insurance Company, based in Beamsville, led by Chairman George M. Smith. These two independent mutual insurers eventually recognized their aligned values and merged to form Bertie & Clinton Mutual Insurance Company.
1970–1999
For decades, BCM Insurance focused on providing reliable mutual insurance solutions to the farming communities in Niagara, standing as one of 52 farm mutual companies operating in Ontario. Throughout its storied history, BCM Insurance witnessed several transitions. Under the leadership of Fred Legg (1970–1990), the company navigated significant industry changes and moved its offices to Dain City in 1981, remaining there until 1999.
1990–2017
Subsequently, under the management of Keith Hallborg (1990–2012), BCM relocated once more, settling at the Merrittville location on December 30, 1999, where it stayed until 2017. In 2017, Bertie and Clinton Mutual Insurance Company moved to its current location in Welland on Niagara Street.
2018-2022
In 2018, the company re-branded to “BCM Insurance Company, with various updates to the logo. Small subsequent changes were made to the BCM brand in 2022, arriving at the BCM you have come to know.
TODAY
Today, BCM Insurance continues to uphold the foundational principles laid over a century ago, evolving to meet modern challenges while maintaining its deep-rooted commitment to the communities it serves. BCM is proud to be one of the only mutual insurers in the Niagara area, and one of the oldest companies in the region.
The Mutual Difference
Mutual insurance is different, and that difference matters. Here, you’re an owner, not a number.
At BCM, we stand firmly upon a foundation built on four core values: trust, kindness, service, and professionalism. These principles form the heart of our organization and guide every aspect of our operations. As we continue to serve our valued clients, we remain committed to upholding these values, ensuring that you receive the utmost care, reliability, and excellence in all your interactions with us.
